Panic unfolded mid-takeoff when a packed commercial jet was forced to turn back after flames and sparks burst from one of its engines.
According to the New York Post, the incident involved a flight operated by Delta Air Lines departing from São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport late Sunday.
Flight DL104, bound for Atlanta, had 272 passengers and 14 crew members onboard when trouble struck.
According to the airline, the aircraft — an Airbus A330-300 — experienced a mechanical issue with its left engine just as it was lifting off the runway.
Videos shared on social media captured the alarming moment.
Sparks could be seen shooting from beneath the wing as the jet’s wheels left the ground, creating a frightening scene for those onboard and observers on the ground.
Despite the dramatic visuals, the crew quickly acted to manage the situation and return safely.
“The Airbus A330-300 landed safely and was met by ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting), then customers were taken by bus to the terminal,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
Emergency crews were waiting when the aircraft touched down, ensuring passengers could exit the plane without further incident.
Delta attributed the scare to a “mechanical issue,” though no additional details were immediately provided.
“The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We apologize to our customers for this delay in their travels,” the airline added.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those on board.
The incident, while brief, underscores how quickly routine flights can turn into high-stress situations — even as safety protocols help prevent worst-case outcomes.
