Spain Shuts Airspace to US Military Flights Over Iran Conflict

Tensions between Washington and Madrid escalated sharply after Spain took the unusual step of blocking its airspace to U.S. military aircraft tied to operations involving Iran.

According to the New York Post, the decision, confirmed Monday by Defense Minister Margarita Robles, expands on an earlier move to deny access to jointly operated military bases.

“We don’t authorize either the use of military bases or the use of airspace for actions related to the war in Iran,” she told reporters in Madrid.

The development was first reported by El País, citing military sources familiar with the situation.

By closing its airspace, Spain is forcing U.S. military aircraft to reroute around the country when traveling to the Middle East. However, exceptions remain in place for emergency situations, according to the report.

The move reflects a broader stance by Spain’s government against involvement in the conflict. Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo made clear the policy is rooted in opposition to the origins of the war.

“This decision is part of the decision already made by the Spanish government not to participate in or contribute ‌to a war which was initiated unilaterally and against international law,” he said during an interview with Cadena SER.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been among the most outspoken critics of U.S. and Israeli military actions targeting Iran, previously describing them as reckless and unlawful.

The diplomatic fallout could deepen further. 

President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may cut trade ties with Madrid over its refusal to allow access to Spanish bases during the conflict.

Spain’s latest move underscores a widening divide between the NATO allies as disagreements over the war continue to intensify.
